Recent Accomplishments

Journal of Pediatric OrthopaedicsAugust 2009: Dr. Scott Mubarak authored the feature article, “Calcaneonavicular Coalition Treatment by Excision and Fat Graft”,  in the Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics.
  • Dr. John S. Bradley:
    • Recently participated as a reviewer on the Special Emphasis Panel of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and National Institutes of Health (NIH) to review contract proposals for grants that were submitted for Targeted Clinical Trials to Reduce the Risk of Antimicrobial Resistance. The significance of this is the fact that Dr. Bradley has never applied for an NIH grant but they believed he was one of the best doctors in the country to serve as a reviewer for giving out this grant.
    • Received is from the Clinical Infectious Diseases Journal. He was asked to write an article commenting on a manuscript, “Ten versus 30 days of Antimicrobials Including a Short Course of Parenteral Therapy for Childhood Septic Arthritis Prospective, Randomized Trial on 130 Culture-Positive Cases” that he reviewed for the journal. His review was judged to be in the top 5% of all that were solicited by the journal in 2008.
    • The FDA Antiviral Drug Advisory Committee met on Oct. 29th in Washington DC to discuss the possibility of placing medicines for the pandemic bird flu in the homes of every family in the US. Dr. Bradley is on the FDA’s Advisors and Consultants staff and was asked by the FDA to participate in this meeting as a Pediatric Infectious Diseases Specialists from RCHSD.
    • Appointed Chair for the Pediatric Community Acquired Pneumonia (CAP) Guidelines Writing Group. There has never been a national guideline for treatment in pneumonia for children. The Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) and Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society (PIDS) have organized to write the guidelines and he has been selected as chair for the guideline writing committee. This was announced at the PIDS council meeting on Oct. 27th in Washington DC.
    • Recently attended the Brasilian Congress on Infectology in Vitoria, Brazil. He presented 3 lectures on antibiotics and antiviral therapy of children on Nov. 11th and 12th. The topics covered areas of clinical research pertaining to RCHSD.
       
  • Dr. Seth Pransky Receives the 2008 Gabriel F. Tucker Award by the American Laryngological Association, for outstanding contributions in pediatric laryngology.
    Dr. Pransky is Director of the Division of Otolaryngology at CSSD and is also an assistant professor of otolaryngology at the University of California – San Diego. The Gabriel F. Tucker Award was established in 1987 to commemorate a father and son, Gabriel Tucker Sr. and Jr., who made major contributions not only to pediatric laryngology, but to laryngology and bronchoesophagology in general. The award honors an individual of noted achievement in that field. 
      
  • Dr. Kenneth Lee Jones and Dr. Marilyn Jones Receive Master Clinician Scholar Award
    The first annual Master Clinician Scholar Award was presented December 2007. The MCS Committee created a detailed review and selection process. The MCS is defined as “… one who excels at assessment of the whole patient and delivery of the highest quality care. Superb history and examination skills are the base of this expertise. S/he is the ultimate diagnostician who creates effective management strategies and communicates and interacts compassionately with the patient and family. Respect for and partnership with all staff working in the clinical environment is critical. Exceptional understanding of pathophysiology is prerequisite.” This year’s awardees are: Dr. Ken Lee Jones (Endocrinology) and Dr. Marilyn Jones (Clinical Genetics).
     
  • Dr. Ron Newfield, presented at the June 2008 annual meeting of the American Diabetes Association in San Francisco on glucose sensors: “Continuous Glucose Monitoring in Pediatrics: Real Life Experience with DexCom™ Sensors”. Co-authors were Kim McNamara (diabetes nurse), and nurse practitioner and certified diabetes educator, Laura Barba.

    Dr. Newfield was also recently published in the New England Journal of Medicine for his article: “Recombinant PTH for initial management of neonatal hypocalcemia.”
     
  • Joseph G. Gleeson has been named an Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute
    Joseph G. Gleeson, Associate Professor in Neuroscience in Pediatrics, has been named an Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. His patient-oriented research is focused on understanding the causes for mental retardation, epilepsy, autism and other brain disorders in children. The position will allow Dr. Gleeson to focus his research project on clinical problems associated with these conditions, in his work at Rady Children's Hospital, San Diego and his work with an extensive array of international collaborators.
     
  • Henry Chambers, M.D. has been elected President of the Board of Directors for the American Academy for Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine (AACPDM) for 2008. The AACPDM is a multidisciplinary scientific society devoted to the study of cerebral palsy and other childhood onset disabilities. The Academy is also focused on promoting professional education for the treatment and management of these conditions, and to improving the quality of life for people with these disabilities. The group was founded in 1947 but since then the Academy's interests have expanded from an initial focus on cerebral palsy into related areas of developmental medicine, including spina bifida, neuromuscular disease, traumatic brain injury and other acquired disabilities, genetic disorders, communication problems, and specific learning disabilities.
     
  • Dr. Peter Newton was voted in as the Treasurer of the Pediatric Orthopedic Society of North America (POSNA) for the next 3 years.
     
  • Dr. Seema Aceves recently had an article published in the Journal of Allergy & Clinical Immunology entitled "Esophageal Remodeling in Pediatric Eosiophilic Esophagitis". LEARN MORE >>
