  • The following are physicians within this specialty:The Pediatric Nephrology Service provides consultations and accepts referrals of patients with renal disease, renal transplantation and end-stage renal disease. These include all children from birth to adulthood with various renal diseases, from benign hematuria and proteinuria, congenital and hereditary renal diseases to chronic renal disease such as renal insufficiency or lupus. The Division is the primary service responsible for the investigation and treatment of children with hypertension. All children with end-stage renal disease in the greater San Diego area are followed by the Division. These services include outpatient follow-up for the management of chronic renal failure and patients on peritoneal dialysis and the chronic hemodialysis service responsible for pediatric patients on an outpatient basis.

A service of apheresis is available as an outpatient service for patients requiring plasmapheresis, stem cell pheresis or red-cell exchange. The Division also provides acute dialysis services such as acute hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis and continuous renal replacement therapy for children requiring these services at UCSD Medical Center and Rady Children’s Hospital. The Pediatric Renal Transplantation Program is under the direct responsibility of the Division. These services include pre-transplant evaluation and work-up, care of the fresh transplant patients and continuous long-term management in the renal transplant clinic.

The Division provides full services of inpatient and outpatient coverage at Navy Medical Center San Diego and Kaiser Permanente San Diego.

    Special services, programs, research:

The Division of Pediatric Nephrology directly and primarily conducts clinical trials in various areas of clinical research. These include trials in pediatric renal transplantation for the investigation of novel immunosuppressive agents for the prevention of acute and/or chronic rejection and the participation in trials and registry of the North American Pediatric Renal Transplant Study Group. Past and present participation of the Division in the evaluation of novel antihypertensive agents in children, novel agents in the prevention of secondary hyperparathyroidism in children with chronic renal failure, the use of agents to reduce high sensitization of patients awaiting renal transplantation. The Division is investigating genetic differences in the handling of immunosuppressive and anti-hypertensive agents.

The Division has been, and continues to be, an active participant in patient/parent education of children with renal disease and has held two symposia sponsored by the National Kidney Foundation of Southern California in San Diego for the Southern California region.
