The physicians of the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Division (Perinatology) have been providing pregnancy care and consultation to families and physicians in San Diego, Imperial and Riverside Counties since 1990. The center's highly trained obstetric specialists joined Children's Specialists of San Diego to work closely with its affiliated pediatric subspecialists. The San Diego Perinatal Center is located adjacent to Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women and Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego.
Our goal is to help women with high-risk conditions maintain their health prior to and during their pregnancy in order to achieve the best outcome possible. Women who could benefit from The Center’s services include those with:
Medical problems such as diabetes, hypertension, asthma, lupus, heart disease, kidney disease, or a clotting disorder
A history of prior pregnancy complications such as preterm labor, premature rupture of membranes, recurrent pregnancy loss, birth defects or fetal growth disturbance
A current pregnancy conceived by infertility treatment
A multiple pregnancy such as twins, triplets, or quadruplets
Our physicians have specialized training in the management of high-risk pregnancies. These physicians, like other obstetrician/gynecologists, are board certified in the specialty of Obstetrics and Gynecology. However, they have chosen to limit their practice to the care of pregnant women and have obtained additional training and board certification in the subspecialty of Maternal-Fetal Medicine. The following physicians provide care at the perinatal center:
Our physicians accept transports of pregnant women from hospitals throughout Southern California when preterm delivery of the baby is anticipated, when fetal therapy such as in-utero transfusion is needed, or when the baby will need surgery as a newborn. They work closely with physicians in adult and neonatal/pediatric medical and surgical subspecialties. Our physicians and staff work with referring and consulting professionals to accomplish:
Development of a Regional Perinatal Center for Excellence which is recognized as a premier program
Provision of easily accessible, state-of-the-art patient care; innovative education programs and quality clinical research
Establishment and continual improvement of standards for maternal-fetal care, obstetric imaging and prenatal diagnosis.
